In March 2024, I was lucky enough to visit Marrakech and it was one of the most incredible trips I've ever been on. Think colorful streets, rich history, delicious food, and gorgeous desert views just a short drive from the city.

Here are some of the best things I did during my time in Marrakech.

1. Lose yourself in the souks

The souks of Marrakech are a shopping lover's dream come true. These labyrinthine-like markets stretch throughout the city, selling handmade shoes, clothes, jewelry, pottery, homeware, food, souvenirs, and much, much more.

Haggling is part of the fun of shopping in Marrakech, although many vendors offer bargain prices to begin with.

I bought a hand-woven bag for my mum while I was shopping in the souks as well as a gold, turquoise ring for myself. Both were completely beautiful and really well-made.

2. Catch the sunrise from a hot air balloon

Hot air balloon ride

The ultimate highlight of this trip (and possibly my entire 2024) was waking up early for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the desert.

We booked the trip online, and we were picked up by the balloon company from our hotel while it was still dark.

We had traditional mint tea and cake while the balloons were set up, and then we climbed into the baskets. I'm not a big fan of heights at all, but it felt so tranquil to slowly float up into the sky.

The views of the Atlas Mountains were incredible, and it was worth every bit of lost sleep.

Once we landed, we were given flight certificates and had a traditional Berber breakfast.

I'd honestly have done it all again the next morning if I could!

3. Visit the Majorelle Garden

The Majorelle Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever been to. Think cobalt blue buildings, bright flowers and greenery, and peaceful walkways.

The garden was once owned by Yves Saint Laurent and it serves as the perfect spot to slow down, relax, and find some shade (which was much needed when I was in Marrakech!)

I sadly didn't have time to visit the Berber Museum at the gardens, but I've heard good things! So definitely drop in if you can.

4. Explore Le Jardin Secret

Tucked away in the heart of the medina, Le Jardin Secret is exactly what its name suggests—a beautiful hidden garden.

If you're only going to visit one garden, I'd recommend the Majorelle Garden over this one, but it was nonetheless a really charming place to spend an hour or two.

This beautifully restored 19th-century garden showcases traditional Islamic landscaping, with lush greenery, and intricate fountains and ponds where we found tiny turtles swimming from rock to rock.

For a panoramic view of the garden, make sure you climb the tower.

5. Enjoy Moroccan food

Tagine

While in Marrakech, I had my fair share of tagines, couscous, fresh seafood, and pastilla (a sweet-savory pastry filled with spiced meat and almonds).

With the option to dine from the roof terrace, Nomad was easily my favorite restaurant we ate at. Everything we had there was completely delicious.

Visiting Marrakech

Marrakech is such a fun and vibrant city, and I can't wait to visit again one day.
